Through all the discourse and reviews I've read, I haven't seen any comparisons with the UK/US The Office. the ghosts watching Friends on their own (though the jokes/references to Friends were great), the fact that Sam realized her mistake banning the ghosts, apologizing and inviting them for dessert, and the ghosts wanting to help Sam and narcing on the neighbors razing their carriage house which was germane to permitting and the shakedown vs a Fiji bank account which wasn't particularly relevant to dinner discussion). Given how the dinner party episode was major leap forward, I checked the UK episode synopses to see if there was an analogous episode there was (UK episode 5) so I watched the 2nd half of it to compare, and thought the US episode cleverly improved on it ( incorporating "Newhart" into the dinner table discussion and Pete being an expert on the show vs. My favorite ghost is Thorfinn, the Viking, who appears to be somewhat of an analogue to the caveman of the UK series? For me, the show kicked into higher gear in episode 4 (dinner party) and some touching episodes (Pete's wife, Hetty's sleep issue) really cemented the show as a favorite of mine. I am loving the concept of the show and how the disparate ghost characters provide plenty of grist for future episodes, which is valuable given the living cast is only 2 characters. I wonder if there were any copyright tussles as a result - the US commercials would have aired in the US around the time of the UK series debuting. I couldn't find those commercials online but I think it was VistaPrint, where their Australian division is running a series in the same vein. About 2-3 years ago there was a commercial about a woman running a bed and breakfast haunted by ghosts. I've decided to hold off on watching the UK series (HBO Max) for now (for the most part), saving it for the summer while the US version is on hiatus.Īnyways, before learning this was a remake of a UK show, I thought it was a series based on a commercial (like that Geico caveman series). When I started googling I learned it was a UK remake, which is considered superior (critics and comments I'm seeing here in reddit). Because I had seen some enthusiastic comments on SpoilerTV plus knowing the show is a hit I gave the first 2 episodes a shot (airing as a single show - was so glad it streamed without commercials) and liked it and kept going (I've been parsing it out a couple episodes a day to savor them.) For me, it hits the sweet spot of gentle, quirky, warm comedies (Ted Lasso, Schitt's Creek, The Good Place) and think it will grow in popularity via word of mouth, since CBS isn't a natural home for it. I stumbled across CBS's Ghosts while looking for something else on the CBS Spectrum On Demand menu.
